Health and Social Care Assistants


The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA), formed out of a merger of the Child Development Agency and the Office of Children’s Registry,  is a leader in Jamaica’s child protection system, with a combined legacy reputation for our work in promoting child-friendly policies and ground-breaking programmes to strengthen families. The CPFSA is under the purview of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information and works collaboratively with the OCA, the JCF, and other government agencies.

 

Position: Health and Social Care Assistants (Level 1B)

Locations:

Manning Child Care Facility, Southfield, St. Elizabeth

St. Augustine Child Care Facility, Chapelton, Clarendon (Southern Region)

Job Summary

To provide direct care for the wards of the state in the Residential Child Care Facility.

 

Qualifications

  • Certificate in Practical Nursing, Social Work or equivalent;
  • Minimum of two (2) years related experience in a direct or related environment;
  • Valid Food Handlers Permit.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Health and Social Care Supervisor, the Health and Social Care Assistance is responsible for: 

  • Assisting with the care of the residents in respect of their physical, psychological and developmental needs, and to be concerned for all facets of their lives while they are resident in the facility.
  • Assisting with the planned programme activities for the residents.
  • Providing basic counseling services to the children.
  • Assisting with mediating, handling conflicts and disputes between children; and encouraging a cooperative spirit among the children
  • Preparing reports on critical incidents according to standard guidelines and within the designated time frame.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of the relevant logs at the facility.
  • Ensuring that there is adequate supervision of residents at all times.

 

Key Competencies

  • Knowledge of the Child Care and Protection Act, Children (Adoption) Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Knowledge of Child Protection and Family Services Agency procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting children locally and internationally.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Must be dependable, courteous and a a team player.
  • Good knowledge of CPR and First Aid.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information obtained on the job.
